Expectations: Define What Success Feels Like

Most people describe what they want. Very few people describe how they want it to feel.

That small difference separates content that lands from content that just exists.

What this layer means

Expectations is where you paint the emotional picture of success. You tell AI not just what to create, but what the finished piece should feel like when a real person reads it, sees it, or experiences it.

The output is the thing itself. A caption, a plan, a page. The experience is what it creates in the person who encounters it. Confidence. Trust. Calm. A sense of being understood.

Why prompts fail without it

Without expectations, AI optimizes for correct instead of right. You get something accurate that feels off. Too stiff. Too salesy. Too generic. You cannot always name what is wrong with it, but you know it is not what you pictured.

What was missing was never information. It was feeling.

Before and after

Before

Write a welcome message for my website.

After

Write a welcome message for my website. It should feel warm and grounded, like a knowledgeable friend talking to someone, not a formal presentation. The reader should finish feeling welcomed and capable, not sold to.

The second version gives AI an emotional target. Now every word choice has a direction.

Your takeaway

Before your next prompt, answer one question: how do I want the person to feel when they finish this? Then say it plainly, in the prompt. Three feeling words are enough to steer the whole result.

Expectations is the third of nine layers. The full Experience includes an emotional tone vocabulary you can pull from any time you are stuck for the right words.
