The BREAKDOWN Framework

Nine layers that turn a vague request into a brief an AI tool can actually act on.

Most prompting advice hands you tricks. The BREAKDOWN Framework hands you a structure. It works because the hard part was never the wording, it was deciding what you actually wanted before you asked.

Each letter is a layer of thinking. Work them in order and the prompt writes itself. Skip one and you will usually find it is the exact thing the AI guessed wrong.

The Nine Layers
  1. Background. The context the tool cannot guess: who this is for, what came before, what constraints already exist.
  2. Role. Who the AI is being asked to be, so its judgment matches the job.
  3. Expectations. What a good result looks like, stated before the work starts.
  4. Aesthetic. Tone, voice and visual feel, described in words you would use with a person.
  5. Key Details. Names, numbers, dates and non-negotiables that must appear exactly.
  6. Direction. The shape of the output: format, length, structure, sequence.
  7. Outcome. The result you intend to use, and what it needs to accomplish.
  8. Warnings. What to avoid, so you stop correcting the same mistake twice.
  9. Narrow It Down. The final tightening pass that turns a good brief into a precise one.
